PlayOn from MediaMall Technologies allows popular game consoles and other media-centric network devices to access online content from providers such as Hulu, ESPN, CBS, YouTube, and Netflix. It is currently in beta, but you can already take advantage of what PlayOn has to offer. There is a 14 day trial available, and the license costs just $30. This guide will take you through the process of installing and setting up PlayOn.

Put simply, Playon acts as a middle man between the sites it is able to access content from, and your DLNA compliant device. Currently it supports the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and the HP MediaSmart TV as playback devices. There are also several other devices that are compatible with PlayOn, a full list is available from MediaMall.

Here are the system requirements directly from the Playon website:

The following are the minimum requirements for the PlayOn PC software:

  • Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or later), Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2003/Windows Home Server (Service Pack 1 or later). 64-bit versions of Windows are also supported
  • Windows Internet Explorer 6 or later (7 is recommended)
  • Windows Media Player 11.0 or later (click here for assistance on Windows Server 2003; click here for assistance on WHS)
  • Installation includes the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 if needed
  • Minimum 1.5 GHz x86 processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 100 MB of available disk space for installation, plus recommended 4-5 GB extra space on the same drive where Windows is installed
  • Internet broadband connection of at least 1.5 Mbps, and home network with wired, powerline, or 802.11n connections (for wireless home networks with 802.11g, either the PC or device should be on a wired connection)

As you can see, it doesn't take a very powerful computer to run PlayOn. The main consideration is your home network.
